Over the course of ten days, Officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department responded to three reports involving breaking and entering and theft of A/C units. Detective Upshaw was assigned to the case. During his investigation, Upshaw discovered that the suspect was captured on video surveillance taking copper from 20 A/C units at a nearby apartment complex. Upon receiving this information, he ran a cursory search for the suspect In LeadsOnline. In doing so, detectives discovered several of the suspect’s transactions at a nearby metal recycling shop. Detective Cruz and Upshaw worked with this recycling company and arranged to be contacted when the suspect returned to scrap additional copper. Not 24 hours later, an employee contacted Upshaw advising him that the suspect had returned, Officers responded, and the suspect was apprehended. The suspect was then interviewed and admitted to the theft of the copper. The total value of the items damaged and scrapped was over $50,000.
